Which Mini Truck is Right for Me?

Daihatsu Hijet

Made by Toyota, Daihatsus are very reliable and comfortable to drive. The 4WD models typically have a hi/lo transfer case and the Climber edition has a locking rear differential. They're a great off-roader, and the 2WD models are great for on-road use. Other options, like air conditioning, fuel injection, and dump beds are easier to find on Hijets than other models. Jumbo Cab models are sometimes available. Since they are built with Toyota components, compatible aftermarket and OEM parts are easy to find.

Subaru Sambar

The Subaru Sambar is one of the most versatile mini trucks available. They are very good on the road as they accelerate quicker and have a higher top speed than any other mini truck. The 4WD Sambars are also a very good off-road option; they are equipped with an Extra-Low gear and have excellent weight distribution in the axles due to the rear-mounted engine, which also makes them quieter. Subarus are tied with Hondas for having the highest ground clearance at 7.5 inches. They also have the most cab space. They are the only 4 cylinder mini truck.

Honda Acty

Honda makes a very reliable mini truck. Parts for Hondas are usually the most affordable, as well. They use Honda's Realtime 4WD, which engages automatically. Hondas tend to have the best fuel mileage. The cab is the smallest and may be uncomfortable for anyone over 5' 10". The trade-off is that the bed is about 5" longer than other trucks. The Attack edition has a rear diff lock, an Ultra-Low crawler gear and Ultra-Low reverse. Hondas have the same ground clearance as Subarus, 7.5", and are the lightest of the mini trucks.

Mitsubishi Minicab

Mitsubishi has been making mini trucks for longer than anyone else. They have a wide variety of options, offering 4 or 5 speed transmission, dump beds, A/C, hi/lo transfer case, 2WD or 4WD, and occasionally left-hand drive. Mitsubishis are known for their simplicity and are very easy to own and maintain. Mitsubishi vehicles made for North America don't have the best reputation for reliability, but that is simply not the case with their mini trucks and other Japanese-market models.

Suzuki Carry

Suzukis are a popular choice for outdoorsmen and farmers. They typically have a hi/lo transfer case and are known for their durability and for being easy to modify with lift kits, engine swaps, etc. Unfortunately, they are sometimes difficult to get ahold of, because even older ones are still very popular in Japan. The Mazda (or Autozam) Scrum is a rebadged Suzuki Carry.
